Black Morass Overview
Black Morass is a level 68-70 dungeon located in the Caverns of Time in Tanaris. Unlike other dungeons, Black Morass features a unique wave-based defense mechanic where you protect Medivh as portals open throughout the encounter. The dungeon requires Old Hillsbrad Foothills attunement to enter, and completing Black Morass is mandatory for Karazhan raid access.
The Black Morass dungeon plays a critical role in the Karazhan attunement chain. After defeating all bosses and defending Medivh successfully, you'll receive The Master's Key from Khadgar in Shattrath City. This key grants permanent access to Karazhan, one of TBC's most important raid instances.
Players need level 66 minimum for Normal mode. For Heroic difficulty, you'll need Revered reputation with the Keepers of Time to purchase the Key of Time from Alurmi.
How the Encounter Works
Black Morass uses a mechanic unlike other dungeons. The entire run is a timed, 18-wave defense. Portal rifts open in sequence, spawning mobs from the Infinite Dragonflight. These enemies attempt to reach and damage Medivh's protective shield. If the shield reaches zero, you fail the dungeon.
Bosses appear at specific wave intervals:
- Wave 6: Chrono Lord Deja spawns
- Wave 12: Temporus spawns (with additional adds)
- Wave 18: Aeonus spawns (final boss)
Between boss waves, you'll face waves of standard enemies. Your group must prioritize killing mobs before they reach Medivh, then focus on defeating the boss when it appears. The Black Morass reward system grants reputation with every mob killed, making the dungeon valuable for faction grinding.
You start with drakes that can assist in combat. These are especially useful during the final Aeonus encounter.
Boss Encounters
Chrono Lord Deja (Wave 6)
Chrono Lord Deja is a large draconic enemy with moderate difficulty. His primary attack is Arcane Blast, a pulse-based AoE that damages nearby players. Tank him away from the group, have DPS burn him down quickly, and continue clearing waves. This boss is typically the easiest of the three.
Temporus (Wave 12)
Temporus introduces more complexity. His signature ability is Mortal Wound, which stacks healing reduction debuffs on targets. Each stack reduces healing received by 10%. Temporus also spawns with additional mobs during the wave. Your group has two options: burn Temporus quickly and clear his adds afterward, or designate an off-tank to handle adds while DPS focuses the boss. Healers should dispel Mortal Wound stacks when possible.
Aeonus (Wave 18)
Aeonus is the final boss and significantly more challenging. His key mechanics are:
- Time Stop: Stuns the entire group for 4 seconds
- Frenzy: Increases his damage and attack speed dramatically
Coordinate cooldowns around Time Stop stuns. Use the drakes provided at the start of the dungeon during this fight. If you activate multiple drakes simultaneously, Aeonus can only dismiss one, leaving extras to damage him. This is crucial for a smooth kill.
Notable Loot and Rewards
| Item | Source | Rarity | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hourglass of the Unraveller | Aeonus (Normal/Heroic) | Epic | Best-in-Slot trinket for melee classes through Tier 5 |
| Dungeon Set 3 Pieces | Chrono Lord Deja, Temporus | Rare (Normal), Epic (Heroic) | Class-specific gear upgrades |
| Primal Nether | Aeonus (Heroic) | Crafting Material | Essential for epic crafting |
| Badges of Justice | All bosses (Heroic) | Currency | 3-5 badges per run; exchange with G'eras in Shattrath |
Beyond gear, Black Morass dungeons grant substantial Keepers of Time reputation. This faction is essential for purchasing recipes, enchantments, and other rewards. Running Black Morass multiple times significantly accelerates Keepers of Time advancement.
Dungeon Quests
The main Black Morass quest chain starts after completing Old Hillsbrad Foothills content. In Caverns of Time, speak to Sa'at to accept "The Opening of the Dark Portal." This quest requires you to:
- Enter the Black Morass dungeon
- Defend Medivh through all 18 waves
- Defeat all three bosses
- Return to Medivh to hand in the quest
Upon completion, return to Khadgar in Shattrath City to receive The Master's Key for Karazhan. Additional daily quests in Caverns of Time reward reputation and currency for repeated Black Morass runs.
Tips for a Smooth Run
- Coordinate AoE damage: Use area-of-effect abilities to clear wave mobs efficiently. Spread AoE so you don't accidentally pull new waves.
- Protect Medivh: Always prioritize killing mobs before they reach his shield. One player should act as a secondary tank to intercept stragglers.
- Plan cooldowns: Save defensive and offensive cooldowns for boss waves. Use potions and flasks before entering.
- Dispel and cleanse: Temporus's Mortal Wound stacks significantly reduce healing output. Keep cleanse abilities ready.
- Drake timing: Activate drakes simultaneously during Aeonus to maximize their damage before dismissal.
- Communication: Assign roles before starting. Designate who handles adds, who calls out waves, and who focuses bosses.
- Heroic difficulty: Only attempt Heroic with well-geared groups. The damage output from mobs and bosses increases substantially.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to complete Black Morass for Karazhan?
Yes. Black Morass is mandatory for Karazhan attunement. You must complete the quest chain starting with Old Hillsbrad Foothills, progress through Black Morass, and defeat all bosses. Khadgar grants The Master's Key only after handing in the final quest.
What level should I be for Black Morass?
Level 68 is the minimum for Normal mode, though level 70 is recommended for comfort. Heroic Black Morass requires level 70 and Revered reputation with Keepers of Time. Group composition matters more than individual levels; a well-coordinated group at 68 can succeed, but an unorganized group at 70 will struggle.
Is Hourglass of the Unraveller worth farming?
Absolutely. The Hourglass of the Unraveller from Aeonus is best-in-slot for melee DPS through Tier 5 content and beyond. If you play a melee class, prioritize getting this trinket. Multiple runs of Black Morass are worthwhile to secure it before stepping into Karazhan.
