High King Maulgar Strategy

High King Maulgar is encountered with his four council members, typically defeated in the following order: Priest → Warlock → Mage → Shaman → Maulgar. Each ogre presents unique challenges, making them perilous for melee fighters; hence, ranged DPS play a critical role. The initial pull is the most crucial phase—if mishandled, the raid can be quickly overwhelmed. Utilizing Misdirection and careful tank positioning ensures that each add is controlled from the outset.

Maulgar himself inflicts significant damage with abilities like Arcing Smash, Mighty Blow, and Whirlwind. Melee players should avoid Whirlwind when it’s active, while the main tank must be well-geared and backed by multiple healers. Maintaining Debuffs like Demoralizing Shout and Thunder Clap reduces Maulgar’s damage, rendering the fight more manageable.

🔍 Strategy Tip: Prioritize communication and coordination during the pull phase to ensure each council member is promptly controlled, minimizing chaos.

At 50% health, Maulgar becomes more unpredictable. He activates Flurry, increasing his attack speed but slightly lowering his damage, and begins using Berserker Charge and Intimidating Roar, potentially knocking back or fearing players. After the council members are defeated, two tanks should remain on Maulgar to absorb charges and recover swiftly from fears. Maulgar is tauntable, making tank swaps straightforward and reliable.

Gruul Strategy

Gruul’s fight is a test of pure damage output and execution, necessitating his defeat before Growth stacks become unmanageable, typically around eight minutes into the encounter. Every 30 seconds, Growth enhances his damage, increasing pressure on tanks, healers, and anyone caught in Cave In zones. As such, strong raid DPS and flawless mechanics are more vital than overly cautious play.

Gruul requires two tanks in melee range at all times. The main tank maintains boss aggro, while the off-tank absorbs Hurtful Strike, which targets the second-highest threat target in melee. If no valid target is present, Hurtful Strike will either kill a melee DPS or severely damage the main tank. Pets cannot absorb this ability, underscoring the importance of precise tank positioning and threat management throughout the fight.

⚔️ Note: Ensure all raid members are inside and past the entrance pillars before engaging Gruul, as the gate to his room closes upon initiation.

Raid positioning is another crucial focus. Players should spread out to minimize damage from Cave In, which creates a damaging area on the ground that intensifies as the fight progresses. The damage is gradual, so moving promptly prevents unnecessary strain on healers. Periodic Reverberation silences the raid, necessitating rapid recovery once it concludes.

The most perilous mechanic is Ground Slam followed by Gronn Lord's Grasp and Shatter. After being knocked back, players must immediately distance themselves from each other while Gronn Lord's Grasp slows them. Once Stoned triggers, Gruul casts Shatter, inflicting substantial damage based on proximity to others. Greater distance results in less damage; being within 20 yards of others is essential, and proximity can easily lead to death. Immunities do not negate Shatter damage; thus, spacing is paramount.

As Growth stacks accumulate, tank damage becomes extreme. Talents like Inspiration, Ancestral Healing, and Improved Lay on Hands provide vital physical damage reduction and should be prioritized by healers. The encounter ends when either Gruul is defeated or the raid's survivability is exhausted, making precise movement, robust healing coordination, and maximizing damage the keys to victory.
