The Steamvault Overview
The Steamvault is a level 70 dungeon located inside Coilfang Reservoir in Zangarmarsh, one of the final dungeons you'll tackle during the TBC Anniversary endgame. This five-person instance features three distinct boss encounters and serves as a critical stepping stone for gearing fresh level 70 characters before raiding.
The dungeon entrance sits at coordinates 50, 33 in Zangarmarsh. Simply swim down into the flooded pipes, follow the tunnels into Coilfang Reservoir, and enter the middle portal of the three available dungeon entrances. The Steamvault quests and loot make this dungeon a must-run for reputation and gear progression.
Boss Encounters
Hydromancer Thespia
Your first major obstacle in Steamvault, Hydromancer Thespia arrives with two Water Elemental adds. Priority: eliminate both elementals before focusing the boss. Thespia herself casts Enveloping Winds (a 6-second stun), Lightning Cloud (dealing Nature damage in an area), and Lung Burst (a DoT that damages individual targets).
Coordinate crowd control on the adds or burn them quickly. If your group lacks reliable CC, simply tank and damage them down. Once the adds fall, the boss becomes manageable.
Mekgineer Steamrigger
The second boss of Steamvault presents a straightforward encounter. Stay mobile, avoid standing in harmful areas, and maintain consistent damage output. No complex mechanics make this fight ideal for learning group coordination.
Warlord Kalithresh
The final boss of Steamvault demands focused execution. Kalithresh periodically channels distillers in the arena. Your team must stop what you're doing and destroy these distillers before he finishes channeling, or he gains an enormous damage buff that spirals the encounter.
Manage positioning carefully: tank Kalithresh at the top or bottom of the room. Players targeted by Impale (purple circle) must move away from the group. Those targeted by Piercing Death (red sight) should position behind a pillar to block the attack. Interrupt channels, destroy distillers, and the Steamvault encounter concludes.
Notable Loot and Rewards
Steamvault rewards both currency and equipment that accelerates your gear progression. Normal mode drops solid blue (rare) items, while Heroic mode introduces epic (purple) gear and Primal Nethers.
| Item Type | Notable Pieces | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Class Set 3 Pieces | Beast Lord, Incanter, Rogue sets | Pre-raid BiS for multiple specs |
| Badges of Justice | Currency from all bosses | Trade for epic gear in Shattrath |
| Primal Materials | Primal Fire, Primal Water | Auction House gold or crafting |
| Gems | Various quality stones | Socket upgrades for gear |
Steamvault's loot table ensures that nearly every run yields something valuable, whether for progression or gold farming.
Dungeon Quests
Multiple quest objectives reward you for running Steamvault. The Warlord's Hideout, given by Watcher Jhang at the Coilfang Reservoir entrance, provides XP and reputation. Orders from Lady Vashj drops randomly inside the instance and rewards XP upon completion.
If you're working toward Karazhan attunement, the Steamvault fragment quest sends you to collect the Second Key Fragment, which sits in the water pool directly to the right of Hydromancer Thespia's location. Grab it early in your run.
Steamvault also offers Cenarion Expedition reputation quests. Preparing for War requires you to gather Coilfang Armaments from naga in the reservoir and return them to Ysiel Windsinger at the Cenarion Refuge. Cenarion Expedition reputation is essential: Revered status unlocks the Coilfang Heroic key, which gates access to Heroic difficulty Steamvault.
Tips for a Smooth Run
The Steamvault features smaller pulls than many level 70 dungeons, making it accessible for fresh level 70s. No single pull requires heavy AoE; focus on controlled, targeted damage instead.
Bring at least one crowd control ability. Many enemies in Steamvault hit hard with Fear and Sonic Burst effects. A mage's Polymorph, priest's Shackle Undead, or warlock's Fear makes these trash pulls significantly safer.
For Heroic Steamvault, ensure every party member exceeds 10k health and carries relevant resistance gear. The dungeon punishes positioning mistakes, so call out mechanics, watch for Piercing Death and Impale, and prioritize destroying Kalithresh's distillers above all else.
Skip unavoidable mobs when possible. Steamvault's layout allows you to bypass certain packs without consequence. Learn the pathing and save time on farm runs.
