Mage Guide for WoW Forever
Dominate PvE raids with Arcane DPS. Freeze enemies in PvP with Frost crowd control. Master Fire crits or choose your playstyle.
What Changed for Mages in WoW Forever
Mages got several overhauls that make each spec feel fresh. Here's what's new:
- Arcane Blast: Stacking damage nuke added to Arcane tree. Each cast increases damage and mana cost. Builds with Arcane Missiles for big dumps. Completely changes Arcane playstyle from steady DPS to spike burst.
- Icy Veins Rework: Frost got a dedicated haste buff. 20% spell haste for 20 seconds on a short cooldown. Enables Frost spell spam rotations instead of pure Ice Lance shatter reliance.
- Molten Armor: Fire casters now have self-buff that increases crit chance. Combos with Pyroblast for higher crit windows and Ignite stacking.
- Spellsteal Added: All specs can steal one buff from enemies. Clutch for removing shields and buffs from hard targets. PvP game changer.
- Conjure Food/Water Scaling: Healing values scale with spell power. Your conjured food actually sustains you through dungeons now instead of being trash tier.
- Ritual of Refreshment: New group conjuring ability. Summon mana tables and food tables for entire raid. Kings of support utility.
- Mana Management Overhaul: Mana pools are bigger but spells cost more. Arcane especially requires timing Evocation cooldown. No more spam-casting.
- Fingers of Frost (Frost talent): Procs frozen effects on non-frozen targets. Enables Shatter combos without Frost Nova setup. Changes Frost rotation completely.
- Heating Up (Fire talent): Reduces next Pyroblast cast time by 25% per stack (max 3 stacks). Fire rotation now revolves around building stacks before unleashing Pyroblast.
- Missile Barrage (Arcane talent): Proc-based free Arcane Missiles with accelerated cast. Makes Arcane rotation proc-dependent instead of pure stack/dump.

Best Races for Mage
Alliance
- Gnome: Expansive Mind gives 5% intellect (pure mana pool boost). Escape Artist breaks snares for kiting. Meta for PvE mana scaling and PvP peelers.
- Human: Spirit bonus scales into mana regen between pulls. Perception detects stealth (huge against Rogues in arena). The Human Spirit passive keeps your mana topped better than other races.
- Skyborne Alliance: Exclusive race with +2% haste from Wind Blessed. Synergizes insanely with Icy Veins for Frost and any haste scaling. If you can roll this, do it.
Horde
- Troll: Berserking gives 20% haste for 10 seconds. Stacks with Icy Veins and Arcane Power for insane burst windows. Fire and Frost both love this.
- Undead: Will of the Forsaken breaks crowd control. Mandatory for PvP arena mages who get feared or charmed. Cannibalize saves you consumables between pulls.
Arcane Mage: Raid Damage King
Arcane is the highest single-target DPS in WoW Forever, full stop. You'll top damage meters on bosses if you manage your mana correctly. The downside: you're mana-hungry and need Evocation on CD.
Arcane Playstyle
Stack Arcane Blast three times, then dump stacks with Arcane Missiles or another Blast. Arcane Power is your burst CD that guarantees high damage windows. Presence of Mind lets you cast off-GCD instantly. Managing mana is everything. You're not spamming, you're juggling damage, mana cost, and cooldowns.
Arcane Rotation
Stat Priority for Arcane
| Priority | Stat | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Spell Damage | Direct scaling for Arcane Blast and Missiles. Every point = more raid damage. |
| 2 | Hit (17% total, ~11-12% from gear) | Forever removed the 1% miss floor. Arcane Focus gives 5% hit from talents, so you need ~12% from gear. Cap this first. |
| 3 | Intellect | Mana pool scales mana efficiency. More mana = longer rotation without Evocation. |
| 4 | Critical Strike | Crit damage on Arcane Missiles crits is solid. Not primary but scales burst windows. |
| 5 | Spirit | Mana regen between fights. Not important in combat, matters for sustainability in dungeons. |
Key Talents
- Arcane Blast: Your main nuke and stack builder. This is the rotation.
- Arcane Missiles: Stack dump for massive damage. Every crit extends duration.
- Arcane Power: Cooldown that doubles damage output for 6 seconds. Plan your burst rotation around this.
- Presence of Mind: Free instant cast. Use before Arcane Blast for instant nuke without spell delay.
- Arcane Focus: Reduces spell hit cap by 2%. Saves you gear itemization.
- Slow: Utility crowd control. Ranged slow for kiting adds away from raid.
Fire Mage: The Crit Machine
Fire is less consistent than Arcane but way more fun. Stack crits until Combustion pops for guaranteed crit windows. Ignite stacking makes top parses spicy. Less technical than Arcane, more reactive.
Fire Playstyle
Fireball spam until you get procs. Pyroblast hits like a truck when you use Presence of Mind to instant-cast it. Combustion guarantees crit window for like 10 seconds. Ignite is passive bleed damage that stacks on boss fights. More about proc management and knowing when to burn resources.
Fire Rotation
Stat Priority for Fire
- Spell Damage: Direct damage scaling. Get as much as possible.
- Hit (16% cap): Can't crit what you miss. Cap it.
- Critical Strike: Fire is crit-dependent. Stack it hard. More crits = more Pyroblast procs = more Ignite damage.
- Intellect: Mana pool for sustained casting. Less important than Arcane since Fire doesn't have mana starvation.
- Stamina: Survival. Fire has no shields so pure health matters more than other mages.
Key Talents
- Fireball: Your spender and stack builder. The rotation.
- Pyroblast: Instant cast nuke from procs or cast manually with instant. Hits hard.
- Combustion: Cooldown that guarantees crits for window. Turns Ignite stacking into burst phase.
- Presence of Mind: Free instant cast. Use for Pyroblast or Fireball.
- Molten Armor: Self-buff that increases crit chance. Synergizes with Pyroblast and Combustion window.
- Ignite: Passive bleed from crits that stacks. Scales into massive damage on bosses over time.
- Scorch: Utility nuke if assigned to debuff boss. Not primary rotation.
Frost Mage: The PvP God
Frost is pure crowd control. Polymorph locks down enemies. Frost Nova and Cone of Cold for grouping. Ice Block is a panic button defensive. In raids you're B-tier DPS but in PvP you're untouchable.
Frost Playstyle
Kite everything. Frostbolt to slow, Frost Nova when enemies get close, Blink away. Ice Lance into frozen targets (Shatter mechanic guarantees crits). Icy Veins for speed burst. Counterspell to interrupt heals in arena. You control the map with slows and roots.
Frost Rotation (PvE)
Frost PvP Rotation
Stat Priority for Frost
- Stamina (PvP): Health pool first. You need to survive focus.
- Spell Damage: Still push damage when you can.
- Hit: Can't kite what you don't land spells on.
- Intellect: Mana for sustained casting during fights.
- Critical Strike (PvE only): Shatter crits. Gear it for raids, ignore for PvP.
Key Talents
- Frostbolt: Your main nuke. Applies slow to all targets.
- Ice Lance: High-damage crits against frozen targets (Shatter guaranteed crits).
- Frost Nova: AoE root that freezes enemies in place. Kiting tool number one. Frozen targets take guaranteed crits from Shatter.
- Icy Veins: 20% haste burst. Enables rapid spell spam windows.
- Blizzard: Channel AoE for dungeons and leveling. Huge damage on grouped packs.
- Polymorph: Sheep CC. Locks down enemies for 50 seconds. Mandatory for PvP.
- Ice Block: Defensive cooldown that makes you immune. Save for burst or hard CC.
- Cone of Cold: Melee range AoE freeze for dungeon tanking or kiting multiple enemies.
- Counterspell: Interrupt cast. PvP tech to stop heals and CCs.
Leveling as a Mage: The Second-Fastest Leveler
Mages are speedy levelers. Only Hunters are faster. You get huge damage, AoE freeze tools, and you can conjure your own food/water (zero gold cost).
Leveling Spec: Frost
Level Frost. Single target is fine but AoE grinding is where Frost shines. Frost Nova x multiple enemies > Blizzard them to death. Mana is free from Conjure (you farm water constantly). Survivability is high from kiting.
Leveling Technique
- Find enemy packs. Don't solo one mob at a time. Frost excels at AoE.
- Pull 3-5 mobs (safely). Frost Nova > Blizzard spam. They all stay frozen.
- Conjure Water after pulls. Never buy water from vendors. You make it free. Food is cheap with your spell scaling.
- Upgrade your spell damage gear constantly. More damage = faster kills = less downtime eating.
- Skip solo elite quests. You don't have burst and solo elites take forever. Do group quests or kill trash mobs instead.
- Run dungeons aggressively. You're a damage carry. Let tanks pull big packs and farm XP fast.
Best Professions for Mage
- Tailoring + Enchanting: Classic mage combo. Craft cloth robes and cloaks, self-enchant them immediately. Zero gold investment. You'll always have best gear at every level.
- Alchemy + Herbalism: Brew intellect potions for mana boosts. Flasks for sustained mana. Pure PvE min-maxing. Herbalism is annoying but free herbs = free potions.
- Engineering: PvP utility. Teleporter trinkets, grenades that stun enemies (breaks kiting), shield gadgets. Underrated for arena mages.
- Enchanting only (skip Tailoring): Buy cloth on auction house for cheap, enchant it, vendor for profit. Lets you farm other skills or just vendor farm gold.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which spec is best for raiding?
Arcane, full stop. Highest single-target DPS in the game on bosses. Fire is B-tier and fun if you prefer crits. Frost is B-tier PvE and only goes Frost if your raid needs the crowd control or you hate Arcane playstyle.
Can Frost mages raid or are they PvP only?
Frost can raid. You'll do B-tier damage which is fine for dungeons and normal raids. You just won't top meters against Arcane or well-geared Fire mages. Pick Frost if you enjoy the playstyle, not for damage.
How do I manage mana as Arcane?
Evocation is your mana button. Cast it when you hit 30-40% mana. Don't wait until OOM or you'll have downtime casting. Intellect gear scales mana pools, so bigger pool = longer sustainable rotations. Presence of Mind lets you weave instant casts between rotations.
What's the Spellsteal talent and when do I use it?
Spellsteal removes one buff from the target. Use it on enemies with shields, damage buffs, or healing buffs. In PvE it's situational (remove specific boss mechanics). In PvP it's clutch for stripping paladin shields or warrior buffs. Ask your raid leader if they want you dispelling.
Should I level Tailoring or skip it and buy gear?
Level Tailoring. Cloth robes are dirt cheap to craft and you self-enchant them. You'll have best-in-slot gear at every level for basically zero gold. If you rush to endgame and ignore professions, you'll be undergeared. Tailoring is the fastest gear investment for mages.
