Kith'ix Tank Guide: Dark Devastation Swaps & Negation Routing 2026

The Unbinding of Kith'ix: Tank Guide

Kith'ix is the single boss of The Unbinding of Kith'ix raid, released in Patch 12.1.5. This guide covers everything the tanks need to know: swap timing, add management, positioning, defensive planning, and Phase 2 survival. For a full raid overview see the Overview Guide.

You need exactly 2 tanks. Lady Liadrin fights alongside the raid as an NPC ally throughout the encounter. Item levels scale from 285 (Raid Finder) to 324 (Mythic). The fight has two main phases separated by an intermission at 100 energy.

Tank Swap Summary

Phase Mechanic Swap Trigger Action Required
Phase 1 Dark Devastation Devastated debuff applied (25s duration) Non-active tank picks up Kith'ix immediately
Intermission Dark Frenzy Surviving adds become enraged Use personal defensive; no swap needed
Phase 2 Negation Debuff applied Run through a Null Gate within 8 seconds

Phase 1 Tank Strategy

Dark Devastation and Tank Swaps

Dark Devastation is the primary tank mechanic in Phase 1. It applies the Devastated debuff with a 25 second duration. The moment the debuff lands, the off-tank taunts and picks up Kith'ix. The debuffed tank uses this window to recover and prepare for the next swap. There is nothing fancy here; just watch your debuff timer and communicate with your co-tank before the debuff falls off.

Boss Positioning

Keep Kith'ix as stationary as possible. Melee players need uptime, and unnecessary movement costs the raid damage at a point where it matters. More importantly, Commanding Presence gives all adds within 25 yards of Kith'ix a 75% damage reduction. Your positioning directly determines whether DPS can cleave adds efficiently. Tank the boss away from where adds are kited so that cleave damage on adds connects outside that 25 yard bubble.

Pick a consistent spot early in the pull and stick to it. Moving the boss unexpectedly to handle adds will cause your melee to drop off and create chaos with add positioning.

Light's Embrace Orbs

Lady Liadrin periodically generates Light's Embrace orbs that grant 90% Shadow damage reduction. As a tank you are taking the heaviest Shadow hits in the room, so prioritize grabbing these. Extinguish is an incoming shockwave that removes Light's Embrace. Use a personal defensive cooldown through Extinguish to cover the gap between losing your buff and picking up the next orb.

Off-Tank Responsibilities

Venomous Hulk

A Venomous Hulk spawns during Phase 1 and must be picked up by the off-tank. This is a large add that hits hard and casts Venom Roar, a frontal cone dealing heavy Nature/Physical damage with knockback. Face the Hulk away from the raid at all times. Have a defensive ready when you grab it. Drag the Hulk toward the nearest Voidweaver so DPS can cleave both targets simultaneously, but keep both outside the Commanding Presence radius (25 yards from Kith'ix) so they do not benefit from the 75% damage reduction.

Mindstingers (Heroic and Mythic)

On Heroic difficulty and above, Eggs hatch into Mindstingers. The off-tank is responsible for picking these up as they spawn. Coordinate with your raid leader on where to stack them relative to the Hulk. Keeping Mindstingers together with other adds lets AoE damage work efficiently, but remember the Commanding Presence radius.

Add Priority Notes

  • Venomous Hulk: off-tank grabs immediately on spawn.
  • Voidweaver: immobile caster, no tank needed. Applies Nightfall DoT stacks to the raid.
  • Bomber Beetles: 3 spawn and fixate random players. Not tankable; ignore them and react to your positioning.
  • Mindstingers (Heroic+): off-tank collects as eggs hatch.

Intermission Tank Strategy

The intermission triggers when Kith'ix reaches 100 energy. Both tanks need to move into Lady Liadrin's Refulgent Bulwark to survive Suffocating Darkness. Do not be caught outside the zone.

Dark Frenzy enrages any adds that survived into the intermission, causing them to hit significantly harder. This is the point where your defensive cooldown rotation matters most for the intermission window. If Abyssal Grasp targets you, it applies an 8 second healing absorb. Healers need to push through the absorb, but a well-timed personal active (Ignore Pain, Ironfur, Shield of the Righteous, etc.) reduces incoming damage while the absorb is active.

The goal is to leave the intermission with adds dead and both tanks at high health heading into Phase 2.

Phase 2 Tank Strategy

Negation and Null Gate

Phase 2 begins at 25% HP with a Stygian Howl raid stun. Once the stun breaks, Negation becomes the primary tank mechanic. Negation grants +100% movement speed but also increases physical damage taken by 100%. The affected tank must run through a Null Gate within 8 seconds to clear it. Clearing Negation triggers Explosive Restabilization, a 10-yard explosion around the tank. Keep other players clear of your chosen Null Gate when you run through it. Missing the 8-second window causes lethal raid-wide damage.

Null Gates spawn targeting one melee player, one ranged player, and one healer. Know where the gates are before the debuff lands. The gate targeting a melee near the boss is usually your fastest option, but communicate with your co-tank so you are not both sprinting for the same gate. On Mythic, multiple Negation stacks make this significantly harder to manage and survival margins shrink considerably.

Nullshards and Nullify

Nullify applies a stacking debuff. At 6 stacks on Normal, 5 on Heroic, or 3 on Mythic, you die. Tanks should be aware of their stack count and avoid picking up additional Nullshards unnecessarily. If the raid has positioning issues that force you close to Nullshards, call it out early.

Burn Phase Positioning

Keep Kith'ix still during Phase 2. Eightfold Eclipse has a cast limit of 8; if 8 casts go out without the boss dying, the raid wipes. Every second of uptime lost to repositioning can cost you the kill. Luminous Grace gives the entire raid +50% damage and +100% healing from Liadrin, so Phase 2 is a pure burn. Stay on the boss, keep it stationary, and survive Negation.

Defensive Cooldown Planning

Map your cooldowns across the fight rather than reacting on the fly.

  • Phase 1, Extinguish: use a personal defensive immediately when the shockwave fires to cover the Light's Embrace downtime.
  • Phase 1, Venomous Hulk pickup: off-tank should have a short cooldown ready when grabbing the add, especially on Heroic+.
  • Intermission, Dark Frenzy: major cooldown here if enraged adds are still up. This is the hardest incoming damage spike outside Phase 2.
  • Phase 2, Negation + Null Gate sprint: you are potentially moving away from healers briefly. Having a passive defensive or a self-sustain active helps.
  • Phase 2, Abyssal Grasp (if active): if the healing absorb carries into Phase 2 or reapplies, treat it the same as intermission.

On Mythic, the multiple Negation stacks in Phase 2 compress your cooldown window. Plan your major externals (Pain Suppression, Guardian Spirit, Ironbark) with your healers before the pull, not in the moment.

Boss Positioning Guide

  • Pick a fixed spot at the start of the pull and keep Kith'ix there for all of Phase 1.
  • Face the boss away from the raid to prevent cleave from hitting players.
  • Maintain distance from add spawn areas so adds spawning outside the 25 yard Commanding Presence radius are killable without the damage reduction.
  • Do not drag the boss toward Voidweavers or Bomber Beetle paths.
  • In Phase 2, hold the same general position from Phase 1. Tanks sprinting for Null Gates should return to position quickly after clearing Negation.

Tank Loot Priority

Item Slot Notes
Lightbearer's Shield Fragment Trinket Absorb shield with damage redirect. Strong defensive trinket, high priority for both tanks.
Corroded Hulk's Skullcap Helm (Plate) Cantrip Shadow AoE effect. Plate only.
Lu'selama, Light's Justice 2H Sword Strength weapon. Relevant for Protection Warrior or Prot Paladin specs using 2H.
Band of the Swarmcaller Ring Mastery/Haste secondary stats. Good for most tank specs.

For a full gearing path see the Midnight Gearing Guide and the BiS Gear page.

Common Tank Mistakes

  • Moving the boss during Commanding Presence: drifting Kith'ix into the add cluster puts your adds inside the 25 yard radius and cuts all cleave damage in half.
  • Missing a Null Gate in Phase 2: Negation is a kill if not cleared within 8 seconds. Know gate positions before Phase 2 starts.
  • Skipping Light's Embrace orbs: 90% Shadow DR is too large to ignore. If you leave orbs on the ground, your healing requirements spike significantly.
  • Holding defensives for a "better moment" in intermission: Dark Frenzy is the right moment. Enraged adds hit harder than anything else before Phase 2.
  • Both tanks chasing the same Null Gate: coordinate who takes which gate. On Mythic with multiple Negation stacks this matters even more.
  • Not communicating swap timing: if the debuffed tank does not call out when Devastated lands, swaps get sloppy and the active tank takes avoidable damage.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do both tanks need to worry about Commanding Presence positioning, or just the main tank?

Mainly the main tank holding Kith'ix, but the off-tank positioning the Hulk and Mindstingers also matters. If the off-tank stacks adds too close to the boss, they fall inside the 25 yard radius and gain damage reduction even without touching Kith'ix.

Is there a tank swap in Phase 2 or just Negation management?

Phase 2 does not have a traditional taunt swap mechanic like Dark Devastation in Phase 1. Negation is a personal debuff that requires the affected tank to run a Null Gate. While that tank is moving, the other tank holds Kith'ix. Coordinate timing so the boss is never uncontrolled.

Can the main tank pick up adds in Phase 1 if the off-tank dies?

You would need to re-decide positioning on the fly. The Venomous Hulk and Mindstingers must be tanked, so if the off-tank is down, the main tank has to pick them up and reposition everything to maintain the Commanding Presence radius separation. Call for battle rez immediately.

How does the Mythic Negation change compared to Heroic?

On Mythic, tanks receive multiple Negation stacks rather than a single application. This increases the urgency and reduces the margin for error on the Null Gate sprint. Combined with the Nullify stack limit dropping to 3, Mythic Phase 2 is substantially harder on tanks than any other difficulty.
