WoW Forever Paladin Guide
Paladin is the plate-armored hybrid class that does everything: heals like a caster, tanks like a wall, and deals burst damage in PvP. In WoW Forever, Holy Paladins are the unmatched healer for raids, Protection holds aggro with style, and Retribution hits different when enemy players are involved.
What Changed for Paladins in WoW Forever
WoW Forever modernized the Paladin toolkit while keeping the core identity intact. The biggest mechanical change: Judgment no longer consumes Seals. You cast Judgment, your Seal stays active. This alone transforms every spec's rotation. Holy Strike is a new melee DPS ability (10s CD) that gives Retribution an actual button to press between auto-attacks. Sacred Arbiter refreshes Judgment debuffs via Holy Strike. Seal of Fury (new Protection seal) taunts enemies for 4 seconds after Judgment. Templar's Bulwark gives Protection a 100% HP absorb shield for 8 seconds on a 4-minute cooldown. Vengeance talent stacks Physical and Holy damage after crits (max 3 stacks).
Spec Overview
| Spec | Role | Tier | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Holy | Healer | S-Tier | Single-target healing king. Plate armor. Mana efficiency. Plate allows mistakes. | No raid-wide AoE healing. Weak on spread damage. |
| Protection | Tank | A-Tier | Durable. Consecration AoE threat. Righteous Defense taunt. High threat. | Mana-dependent. Less mobile than other tanks. |
| Retribution | DPS | C-Tier | Seal proc burst in PvP. Self-heals. Feared in battlegrounds. | Lowest raid DPS. Auto-attack dependent. Rage-like mechanic without rage. |
Best Race for Paladin
Alliance
Human is the meta pick. Human Sword Spec gives +5% damage with one-handed swords, which stacks with any shield-using tank or DPS build. You also get Perception for PvP fear immunity and rep gain bonuses for professions. Dwarf is solid for PvP: Stoneform removes bleeds and poisons in one GCD, clutch for dispel immunity. Draenei Paladins (yes, they exist now in Forever) get extra Intellect for healing mana, but Human edges ahead for flexibility.
Horde
Undead Paladin is the new hotness in WoW Forever. Will of the Forsaken breaks fear effects, massive for PvP. Seal damage scales with Strength differently in Forever, so Orc wouldn't help much. Tauren Paladins get extra health and Stomp for mobs, solid for tanking comfort but not BiS.
Holy Paladin - The Healer
Holy Paladin is the safest healer in WoW Forever raids. You wear plate armor, which means you survive hits that would delete cloth healers. Your toolkit is tight: Flash of Light for spam healing, Holy Light for big tank heals, and Judgement of Light on the boss to heal whoever hits it next.
Holy Healing Rotation
Your priority list: Cast Judgement of Light on the boss before the pull (or re-apply mid-fight if it falls off). Spam Flash of Light on whoever is taking damage. If the tank drops low, Holy Light for a chunky heal. Keep Blessing of Wisdom on other healers and mana-hungry DPS. Keep Blessing of Kings on your main tank. Cleanse diseases and poisons off anyone toxic mobs target. Avenging Wrath is your panic button: 100% crit chance on next heal, instant cast. Use it when your tank gets bursted.
Stat priority: +Healing > Intellect > MP5 > Stamina > Crit. You want spell power first (gear with +Healing is your main stat), then mana pool, then mana regen. Holy Paladins are mana-efficient, so regen beats crit for survivability.
Protection Paladin - The Tank
Protection Paladin is a mana tank. You manage aggro and durability through spell casts, not rage. Your core combo: Consecration for AoE threat and damage, Holy Shield to reduce melee damage, Judgement on cooldown for threat and utility, and Righteous Defense to taunt single targets back to you.
Protection Tanking Rotation
Pre-pull: Consecration on the ground, then pull mobs into it. In combat: Consecration stays up for AoE threat (costs mana, so watch it). Holy Shield rotates on yourself for 30% melee damage reduction. Judgement on CD for threat. Single target taunts go through Righteous Defense (yes, it's a real taunt, not just a reflect). Exorcism hits hard on undead and demon bosses. Mana management is critical: if you run OOM, you can't hold aggro. Drink during downtime.
Stat priority: Defense 440+ > Stamina > Spell Damage > Block > Dodge. You need 440 Defense to avoid boss crushes. Then stack Stamina for raw durability. Spell Damage helps threat from Consecration, so some pieces are BiS.
Retribution Paladin - The PvP Sleeper
Retribution is a meme spec in raids. Your DPS is bottom-tier because you're auto-attack dependent and your Seal procs don't scale. But in PvP? Retribution Paladins are feared. Seal of Command procs hit like a truck when they land, and Seal proc-into-Judgement chunks players hard. You have self-healing through Seal of Light, making you a slippery target to kill.
Retribution Combat Rotation
Seal up with Seal of Command (best DPS procs). Auto-attack is your primary damage source. Crusader Strike and Judgement go on CD for proc chances. Seal of Light keeps you alive in skirmishes. Avenging Wrath doubles your damage for the burst window. Hammer of Justice is your only CC, use it on kiting healers. In raid, you're filler DPS, but in battlegrounds, you're a kill target that hurts back.
Stat priority: Strength > Hit (6%) > Crit > Agility > Spell Damage. Hit rating matters because your auto-attacks miss at range. Strength scales Seal damage better than spell power.
Paladin Class Mount Quest
At level 60, Paladins get access to the epic Charger quest. This is an actual quest chain that takes 30 minutes. You'll gather materials (a ruby, some holy water, a heart of a fire elemental) and turn them in at your class mount trainer. Reward: a glowing Charger mount that only Paladins ride. It's slower than flying (obviously), but it looks incredible and it's yours. The quest is memorable solo content that makes Paladin feel special.
Leveling as Paladin
Leveling solo as Paladin is slow but unkillable. Pick Retribution for leveling (you need the auto-attack damage). Pull 2-3 mobs at a time. Drop Consecration under your feet. Heal yourself with Flash of Light between pulls. You'll take forever to kill each mob, but you'll never die. Dungeons are much faster: you can tank or heal, and queue times are instant. Dungeons will level you 1.5-2x faster than open world grinding.
Key tip: don't worry about optimal DPS while leveling. Paladins are unkillable, which means you can learn the game without stress. Grab plates with Stamina and don't overthink it until max level.
Best Professions for Paladin
For Raids
Mining + Blacksmithing. You wear plate, and Blacksmithing gives you exclusive plate pieces that don't drop from bosses. A self-crafted helm with extra sockets is 1-2% DPS gain. Mining funds it too, so it's self-sufficient.
For PvP
Mining + Engineering. Engineering gives you bombs, shields, and gadgets that turn fights. Rocket Boots, Tymapus Bombs, and Nitro Boosts are all useful in battlegrounds. Engineers also craft shields and mail armor (if you're desperate for gear).
For Gold
Herbalism + Alchemy. Potions and flasks sell every day. Holy Paladins especially benefit from crafting Mana Potions for raid fights. Less flashy than the above, but consistent gold.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Holy Paladin a viable raid healer?
Yes, absolutely. Holy Paladin is S-tier for single-target healing. Your main tank will be healed better by a Holy Paladin than any other healer. The tradeoff: you don't have raid-wide AoE healing, so you're paired with Druids or Priests who cover spread damage. If a boss does heavy single-target damage, Holy Paladin is your first pick.
Can I tank as Paladin?
Yes. Protection Paladin is A-tier for tanking. You're durable, have AoE threat, and your taunts work on single targets. The only weakness: you're mana-dependent, so high-level raids require good mana management. You're not impossible to play, just different from Warrior or Druid tanks.
Why is Retribution so bad in raids?
Retribution DPS scaling is broken. Your Seal procs scale poorly with spell power, and you're forced to auto-attack to proc them. A Rogue with the same gear will do 30-40% more damage. You're not useless, but you're the last DPS hire. PvP is a different story: Seal procs are broken there.
What's the best Paladin spec for dungeons?
Tank or heal. Retribution leveling is fine, but at max level, tanking dungeons is faster and you'll be needed. If you heal, you'll get instant queues too. DPS queues are 15-30 minutes. Tank or heal, and you're running dungeons non-stop.
How do I get Undead Paladin on Horde?
Roll a new Undead and pick Paladin at character creation. Will of the Forsaken (your racial) breaks fear effects, which is huge in PvP. It's only available in WoW Forever, so grab it while you can.
Next Steps
Once you hit 60, gear up through dungeons and Battlegrounds. Holy Paladins should farm Holy badges for healing plate. Protection needs Defense gear first (440 Defense cap), then Stamina pieces. Retribution just needs plate with Strength, same as any DPS.
