WoW Forever Rogue Guide: Specs, Talents, Rotations & Strategies

Rogues are the kings of PvP in WoW Forever and a top-tier PvE DPS choice if you know how to play. The class rewards mechanical skill above all else. Pick the right spec for your playstyle, and you'll dominate. Pick wrong, and you'll regret it.

What Changed for Rogues in WoW Forever

WoW Forever isn't vanilla. Rogues got several significant buffs that make the class even stronger:

  • Poison System Rework: Deadly Poison, Instant Poison, and Wound Poison all hit harder and apply more consistently. Poison damage scales better with gear.
  • Cloak of Shadows: Now baseline for all specs (5-minute cooldown). Removes all magic effects instantly. Trivializes many PvP matchups against casters.
  • Shadowstep: Added to Subtlety tree. Close gaps, reposition, escape. Game-changing for PvP.
  • Stealth Detection Adjustments: Range tweaked for balance. Harder to blindly find a rogue in stealth, but detection tools are more reliable when used intentionally.
  • Lockpicking Bonus: Special dungeon chests unlocked only by Rogues now contain bonus loot. Valuable if you farm dungeons regularly.
  • Poison Crits: All poisons can now crit for 150% damage. Crit rating is way more valuable than in Classic because it scales your poison damage too.
  • Sap No Longer Breaks Stealth: Massive PvP and dungeon change. Sap targets without losing Stealth. Chain-CC is now trivial.
  • Expertise (New Stat): Reduces enemy dodge/parry chance. Soft cap 6.5%. Mandatory alongside Hit rating at 60.
  • Smooth Energy Regen: Energy regenerates continuously now instead of Classic-style 2-second ticks. Abilities feel responsive, no more waiting for the tick.
  • Combo Points Persist: Switching targets no longer wastes combo points. Huge QoL for dungeons and PvP.

Rogue Spec Overview

Spec Role Playstyle Tier Strengths Weaknesses
Combat PvE Raid DPS Sustained auto-attack damage A Highest sustained DPS, Blade Flurry cleave, reliable rotation Lower burst than Assassination, less survivability than Sub
Assassination PvE Single-Target Poison and bleed damage B Strong burst, Mutilate finisher, Envenom scaling Requires daggers, poison ramp-up, less consistent than Combat
Subtlety PvP Ganking Stealth, burst, CC chains S Best ganking opener, stunlock chains, Preparation resets, Shadowstep Lower sustained damage than Combat, depends on stealth openers

Best Race for Rogue

Alliance

Human: Expertise with swords and daggers (passive +5 Sword Skill). Perception detects stealth in an 8-yard radius. Breaks enemy rogue stealth ganks. Best overall choice for PvP.

Night Elf: Shadowmeld + Stealth combo is broken. You can meld mid-fight, break combat, and vanish. Alliance's second-best PvP pick.

Gnome: Escape Artist breaks roots and snares every 1.5 minutes. Survivability tool for tight situations. Less flashy than Human or Night Elf.

Horde

Orc: Hardiness reduces stun duration by 15%. Anti-Rogue passive since stunlocks are your main threat. Stun Resistance wins 1v1s against other Rogues.

Undead: Will of the Forsaken breaks fear and charm. Desecrate removes diseases. Useful defensive tool, but less impactful than Orc in Rogue mirrors.

Troll: Berserking gives attack speed burst. Less valuable than Orc's stun reduction, but still solid for Combat.

Combat Rogue: The PvE Workhorse

Combat is the best spec for sustained raid DPS. Every piece of Agility gear multiplies your damage. You'll outstroke Assassination Rogues on the damage meter if you're geared and playing correctly.

Stat Priority

Stat Priority Cap / Notes
Agility 1st No cap. Scales damage and armor.
Hit 2nd 6% (dual-wield yellow hit cap), 24% (white cap for bosses)
Crit 3rd Scales DPS linearly after hit cap
Strength 4th Much weaker than Agility. Skip unless overgeared.
Attack Power 5th Scales with dual-wield. Weak stat for Rogue.

Core Rotation

  1. Sinister Strike to 5 combo points
  2. Slice and Dice (maintain this buff always)
  3. Sinister Strike to 5 combo points
  4. Rupture on single target (bleed damage scales with AP), or Eviscerate for burst
  5. Repeat

Cleave & AoE

Blade Flurry is your AoE button (unlocked at level 30). It hits all targets in front of you with both weapons. On 3+ adds, use Blade Flurry + Sinister Strike spam instead of building combo points. Once Blade Flurry drops, refresh Slice and Dice on the main target and re-apply Rupture.

Burst Windows

Use Adrenaline Rush on damage phases or when you need to close the DPS window before the boss moves. It's a 3-minute cooldown that increases your attack speed by 25% for 15 seconds. Stack it with other CDs (Bloodlust, PI) for max damage.

Assassination Rogue: Single-Target Burst

Assassination is the poison and bleed specialist. You require daggers to function (Mutilate dual-wields). The spec excels at single-target burst but is harder to gear than Combat.

Playstyle

You spend your early rotation ramping poison damage (Deadly Poison and Instant Poison stacks). Once stacks are high, Mutilate generates fast combo points, and Envenom (your finisher) scales with poison damage and combo points. Your damage ramps over 30 seconds, then explodes. This makes Assassination terrible on trash and excellent on bosses.

Rotation

  1. Mutilate to 5 combo points (builds poison stacks each hit)
  2. Envenoms for 5 CP (damage scales with current poison damage)
  3. Repeat while maintaining Rupture and Deadly Poison

Gear Requirements

You need good dagger weapons to scale. Poison damage also scales with spell power, which is not on many Rogue items. Combat is safer for gearing unless you specifically farm dagger drops.

Subtlety Rogue: The PvP Spec

Subtlety is what makes Rogue the best ganking class in WoW Forever. You open from stealth with a guaranteed stun and a damage spike. If you play perfectly, your target never touches you.

The Opener

Stealth closes to melee range. Cheap Shot for 3 seconds of stun (guarantees land from stealth). Hemorrhage twice (faster combo point generation than Sinister Strike, costs 35 energy instead of 40). Kidney Shot for another 4 seconds of control. By the time the stun chain ends, you've dealt 30-40% of their health in burst.

The Resets

Vanish breaks combat and grants stealth instantly. Preparation resets Vanish's cooldown (and Cool Shot if talented). Use Vanish + Preparation to chain multiple openers. If your target survives the first opener, Vanish > wait 2 seconds (for stealth to trigger) > open again. Most players die before the second opener lands.

Survivability

Your defense is stealth. Cloak of Shadows purges magic debuffs every 5 minutes. Evasion increases dodge by 50% for 15 seconds (situational). Shadowstep lets you kite and reposition without breaking stealth. Rogues have terrible armor and HP, so don't expect to tank damage. Open fast and end fights before enemies lock you down.

Stat Priority for PvP

Stat Priority Reasoning
Agility 1st Damage, armor, dodge all scale.
Stamina 2nd Extra HP = harder to burst from stealth. Seek 50+ extra HP where possible.
Hit 3rd 5% cap (required to not miss attack macros against players).
Crit 4th More burst on openers.
Resilience 5th If available from PvP gear. Reduces burst damage taken.

Leveling as a Rogue

Fast if you use stealth efficiently. Slow if you die a lot. Use Combat spec while leveling (sustained damage is more forgiving than burst).

Strategy

  • Pull efficiently: Stealth past packs you don't need. Only open on mobs your level or lower.
  • Cheap Shot + Kill: Open with Cheap Shot to stun. Use Sinister Strike spam. Most mobs die before the stun ends.
  • Eat between pulls: Rogues have no healing tools (until level 80 with Recuperate). Buy vendor food and spam it.
  • Blade Flurry at 30: Once you unlock it, AoE farms become viable. Pull 3-4 mobs, Blade Flurry, spam Sinister Strike.
  • Poison early: Deadly Poison applies at level 10. Always have it active, even while leveling.

Accelerate your leveling with a professional boost. Focus on learning your spec instead of grinding.

Best Professions for Rogue

Skinning + Leatherworking: You wear leather. LW makes epics at high levels. Also provides BoE gear for alts. Good gold generation selling high-level patterns.

Mining + Engineering: PvP-focused. Build bombs, trinkets, goggles, and gadgets. Sappers and grenades add utility. Goggles give passive stats. Less profitable than LW but stronger for pure PvP.

Herbalism + Alchemy: Passive income. Rogues don't benefit from flask passives more than other classes, but the gold from selling flasks is solid.

Avoid Tailoring and Blacksmithing: You don't wear cloth or plate. Not worth the time.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can Rogues Tank in WoW Forever?

No. Rogues have low armor and zero survivability tools besides Evasion and Cloak of Shadows. You're designed as a glass cannon. Leave tanking to warriors and paladins.

What's the Best Rogue Spec for Raiding?

Combat, by a mile. Assassination is viable but harder to gear. Subtlety has almost no place in PvE (stunlock doesn't work on bosses). Combat gives you the best damage-per-second on farm content and progression.

How Do I Counter Other Rogues in PvP?

Play Subtlety and open first. If you can't open first, use Cloak of Shadows to break their openers and reposition. Humans with Perception have a 8-yard stealth detection radius. Orc stun reduction also helps. If you're fighting another Rogue at equal gear, mechanics and cooldown usage win.

Do I Need Daggers for Combat?

No. Combat uses any weapons. Swords and maces preferred for the Sword Specialization passive (swords proc cleave). Daggers work but don't gain bonuses. Assassination is the dagger-dependent spec.

Should I Respec Between PvE and PvP?

Yes. Combat gear and talents don't translate to PvP openers. If you raid and want to PvP competitively, maintain separate gear sets and specs. You can afford two specs in WoW Forever. Use them.
