WoW Midnight Tank Tier List - August 2026 (Season 2, Patch 12.1)

Updated for Season 2 launch. Rankings based on Wowhead's Mythic+ Tank Tier List (YoDaTV, updated August 11, 2026). Season 2 dungeon pool: Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, King's Rest, Temple of Sethraliss, and Ruby Life Pools.

Tank balance is healthy in Season 2 -- every spec is viable. The key shift from Season 1: Blood DK jumps to S-tier thanks to a string of buffs and a major bug fix to Dancing Rune Weapon survivability. Brewmaster drops from its Season 1 top spot to A-tier after losing its strong S1 tier set. The meta rewards utility and self-agency, and Blood DK delivers both.

M+ Tank Tier List (Season 2)

S-Tier: Blood Death Knight

Blood DK enters Season 2 as the strongest tank. A series of buffs combined with a hotfix to Dancing Rune Weapon's survivability -- a bug that had been limiting the spec since Season 1 -- pushed it to the top. As of Season 2 launch, Blood DK is dealing the most damage and taking the least damage of all tanks before self-healing is factored in.

Death Strike scaling with Haste and Versatility gives Blood DK strong, reactive self-sustain that fits the Season 2 dungeon pool. The kit also brings double Death Grip, one of the most valuable tank utilities in Mythic+ for repositioning priority targets and interrupting casts from range. Self-agency is higher than any other tank spec -- Blood DK doesn't rely on external healer support to survive hard pulls.

Best in: any dungeon with significant trash repositioning (Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk) or sustained boss damage phases.

A-Tier: Guardian Druid

Guardian Druid took a significant nerf going into Season 2 -- Lunation's cooldown was effectively tripled, removing Lunar Beam from the fast-cycling toolkit it used in Season 1. Despite this, Guardian remains solidly A-tier. The Season 2 tier set opens a new build around Mangle and Thrash spam with increased Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc uptime, which partially compensates for the Lunar Beam loss.

Druid utility remains strong: Bear Form passives, Stampeding Roar, and the ability to stealth-skip via Prowl make it valuable across the full dungeon pool. For players coming from Season 1 on Guardian, the spec is still comfortable -- it's just a tier step down from its previous strength.

A-Tier: Protection Paladin

Prot Paladin received a full damage profile rework for Season 2, shifting to a healthier damage rotation than Season 1, plus 10% passive damage reduction from the new Seal of Reprisal. However, late PTR nerfs hit hard: Sentinel lost 3 seconds of duration and Reflection of Radiance saw a major nerf to Grand Crusader procs, cutting defensive uptime significantly.

Prot Paladin is exceptional for lower and mid-range keys where the Avenger's Shield silence on trash mobs carries real value -- solo interrupts on casters are hard to replace. At the high end, the meta nerfs likely take it out of the top compositions, landing it firmly in A-tier rather than pushing for S.

A-Tier: Vengeance Demon Hunter

VDH benefited from significant mid-Season 1 buffs and carries a decent Season 2 tier set. The weak point is defensive consistency: Metamorphosis rework from Season 1 entry reduced sustained self-healing outside of the cooldown window, and Voidfall proc uptime is RNG-dependent. When Voidfall lines up, VDH is extremely durable; when it doesn't, the spec can feel brittle.

Chaos Brand's 5% magic damage amplification is one of the better raid buffs available from a tank, making VDH a natural fit in caster-heavy compositions (especially alongside Arcane Mage, which is currently A+ tier for DPS).

A-Tier: Brewmaster Monk

Brewmaster loses its strong Season 1 tier set, which makes energy flow more awkward and reduces the smoothness of the stagger cycling loop. The spec still performs well in physical damage compositions due to Mystic Touch's 5% physical damage increase, and it can clear high keys with adequate healer support.

Compared to Season 1 where Brewmaster was the clear top pick, Season 2 brings it in line with other A-tier tanks. It's no longer the automatic choice, but it remains a strong option for players already comfortable with the spec.

B-Tier: Protection Warrior

Prot Warrior picks up small buffs in Season 2 but the core limitation remains: competitive damage output is gated behind Spell Reflection windows. Outside of those windows, the damage contribution lags behind the A-tier tanks. The spec is perfectly viable for progression and lower-to-mid key ranges where raw damage matters less, but at the high end it's the weakest of the six tanks.

Raid Tank Rankings

For The Venomous Abyss, Blood DK and Guardian Druid lead. Blood DK's self-sustain handles Mythic raid mechanics effectively, while Guardian's Barkskin and passive healing reduce healer burden on tank-swap bosses. Brewmaster and VDH are solid backup choices for progression guilds.
