Altar of Fangs Mythic+ Guide: Bosses, Routes & Tips

|~6 min read|WoW Midnight

Altar of Fangs Overview

Altar of Fangs is the newest three-boss dungeon arriving in Patch 12.1 of World of Warcraft: Midnight. Located on The Coiled Isle, this troll temple dungeon focuses on venom and serpent-worship mechanics. The dungeon launches on Normal and Heroic difficulties at patch release, then enters the Mythic+ rotation one week later when Season 2 begins.

The altar of fangs joins a Midnight Season 2 M+ pool of eight dungeons total: five new Midnight dungeons plus three legacy encounters. This is your first chance to experience troll raid design at a high level of difficulty, with mechanics tuned specifically for coordinated team play.

Expected loot ranges from Adventurer track (259-276 iLvl) on Normal, Veteran track (272-289 iLvl) on Heroic, and scales with your key level in Mythic+.

Boss 1: Rav'i

Rav'i is the opening encounter in the altar of fangs. As a first boss, this fight teaches the dungeon's venom-focused combat patterns and sets the difficulty baseline for the rest of the run.

While specific ability breakdowns are still being finalized on the PTR, expect encounters centered around poison damage and positioning. Dispel debuffs when they appear and watch for ground effects that punish standing still. Healers should pre-position and have cooldowns ready for poison burst phases.

Rav'i shares the serpent theme common throughout altar of fangs, so movement and awareness of enemy placement will be critical even at baseline difficulty.

Boss 2: The Writhing Coil

The Writhing Coil is the middle boss of the altar of fangs dungeon, and the name alone suggests a serpent or venom-based creature central to the zone's mythology. This encounter will likely push healing checks and tank survivability beyond Rav'i.

Anticipate mechanics involving coiling patterns, stacking or spreading requirements, and sustained poison damage. The writhing coil design pattern in previous dungeons often includes phases where players must respond quickly to changing mechanics, so maintain high awareness of boss positioning and any environmental hazards.

This fight is a good checkpoint to ensure your group is ready for the final boss. If you're struggling here, revisit your gear and make sure support roles are coordinating cooldowns properly.

Boss 3: Zul'jan

Zul'jan is the final boss of altar of fangs and represents a major story character in the Midnight campaign. As Zul'jarra's brother and a key antagonist throughout the expansion, this fight serves as a climactic encounter with the complexity you'd expect from the dungeon's concluding challenge.

Story-wise, Zul'jan embodies the serpent-worship and venom themes of the altar of fangs temple itself. Mechanically, expect a multi-phase fight with escalating difficulty, likely combining elements tested on Rav'i and The Writhing Coil while adding new twists.

This is a meaningful gear check. Groups attempting higher M+ keys on altar of fangs will want to ensure everyone survived Zul'jan comfortably on lower difficulties first. Positioning, dispel coordination, and cooldown management will all matter here.

Mythic+ Tips

The altar of fangs is one of five new dungeons in the Midnight Season 2 rotation, which means groups will have fresh paths to learn and optimize. Here's what to expect when running this dungeon in Mythic+:

Healing and Dispels. The venom and poison focus of altar of fangs means dispel effects and healing throughput will be more important than in some other dungeons. Make sure your group has adequate defensive cooldowns and that healers are positioned to handle burst damage phases.

Movement and Positioning. Serpent-themed dungeons often emphasize dynamic positioning and movement checks. Don't stack carelessly, and call out mechanics early so your team can react quickly.

Trash Pathing. Routes for altar of fangs are still being optimized. After launch, check current progression guides from top guild runners and Mythic+ racing teams to find the most efficient pulls and skip strategies.

Key Level Tuning. Like all new Midnight dungeons, altar of fangs difficulty will shift as Blizzard tunes affixes and enemy health. Early data from keys run by world-first raiders will inform what a "reasonable" +10 or +15 looks like. Don't overshoot early.

This guide will be updated with detailed ability breakdowns and optimal M+ routes once the dungeon goes live and guilds begin pushing higher keys.

Loot and Rewards

Altar of Fangs loot scales based on difficulty:

Normal Difficulty: Adventurer track gear, 259-276 iLvl. Good for catching up alts or filling empty slots before moving to Heroic.

Heroic Difficulty: Veteran track gear, 272-289 iLvl. The recommended entry point for Season 2 if you cleared Season 1 Mythic+, since M+ keys now reward Champion and above.

Mythic+ Keys: Champion, Hero, and Myth track loot depending on key level. Higher keys award better iLvl and occasionally bonus items. Runs on altar of fangs at +2 and above also reward a weekly Great Vault slot.

Expect standard dungeon drops plus potentially unique transmog and achievement rewards tied to the troll and serpent themes of the altar.

FAQ

When does Altar of Fangs release for Mythic+?

Altar of Fangs launches on Patch 12.1 at Normal and Heroic difficulties. Mythic+ access begins one week later when Midnight Season 2 officially starts. This gives players time to farm entry-level gear before pushing keys.

Is Altar of Fangs harder than other Midnight dungeons?

That depends on the other four dungeons in the rotation and how Blizzard tunes them. Early reports suggest altar of fangs will have higher healing demands due to venom and poison mechanics. Start on +2 or +3 to gauge difficulty relative to other dungeons you've run.

What classes are best for Altar of Fangs?

Classes with strong dispel coverage and movement tools will have an easier time. Poison and disease removal will likely be valuable, so shamans, priests, and monks have clear utility. Don't exclude less mobile classes; good positioning makes up for slower movement.

Will there be detailed boss guides before launch?

Yes. Once PTR testing wraps and the dungeon goes live, we'll post detailed ability breakdowns and strategy guides. For now, this page focuses on overview and general expectations based on the serpent-worship and venom themes of altar of fangs. Check back after launch for specific tank positions and healer placements.

How do I get a team for Altar of Fangs M+?

The Mythic+ community is large during Season 2 launch. Use group finder, your guild, or Discord servers dedicated to M+ racing. If you're aiming for Keystone Master, consider booking a Koroboost M+ carry to skip early grinding and jump into higher keys once you're geared.
