WoW Midnight Raid Loot Guide: Season 2
Season 2 of WoW Midnight centers around The Venomous Abyss, an eight-boss raid on The Coiled Isle, and the Tidebound Grotto instanced world boss. This guide covers all loot sources, item levels, upgrade paths, and gearing strategies for Season 2. Every number here is verified against live servers.
The Venomous Abyss: Item Levels by Difficulty
The Venomous Abyss drops gear on the upgrade track system. Raid boss drops start at track 3/6 for early bosses and scale up to 6/6 for the final two. The last two bosses on Mythic difficulty drop gear at a special 9/6 tier, significantly above the standard Myth track cap.
| Difficulty | Item Level Track | Boss Drop Range | Great Vault |
|---|---|---|---|
| LFR | Veteran | 272-289 | Champion 1/8 (285) |
| Normal | Champion | 292-302 | Hero 1/6 (298) |
| Heroic | Hero | 305-315 | Myth 1/6 (311) |
| Mythic | Myth | 318-328 | Myth 6/6 (328) |
| Mythic (last 2 bosses) | Myth 9/6 | 344 | 344 |
The jump from Myth 6/6 (328) to Myth 9/6 (344) on the last two bosses is one of the largest ilvl gaps in Midnight. This makes Mythic progression on The Coiled Altar and Ula'tek extremely rewarding.
Boss Loot Sources
Each boss drops loot scaled to its position in the raid. Early bosses drop lower-track items, while later bosses drop higher-track gear.

| 4 | Vashnik the Malignant | 295 | 308 | 321 |

Great Vault Raid Rewards
The Great Vault provides a weekly gear selection based on your raid activity. Season 2 improved vault rewards across all difficulties:
- LFR: 1 vault slot per wing cleared. Vault reward: Champion 1/8 (285 item level).
- Normal: Kill 2/4/6 bosses for 1/2/3 vault slots. Vault reward: Hero 1/6 (298 item level).
- Heroic: Kill 2/4/6 bosses for 1/2/3 vault slots. Vault reward: Myth 1/6 (311 item level).
- Mythic: Kill 2/4/6 bosses for 1/2/3 vault slots. Vault reward: Myth 6/6 (328 item level). Last 2 boss kills reward Myth 9/6 (344).
Heroic raid is particularly strong for gearing this season. A single Heroic clear gives you a Myth-track vault choice at 311, which is higher than anything you can get from Normal difficulty drops (max 302).
Bonus Rolls
Bonus rolls return in Season 2 at a reduced cost of 1 coin per boss (down from 2 in Season 1). The key change: rolling on Heroic difficulty grants Myth-track loot, making Heroic clears extremely valuable for gearing.
Starting from Week 8 of the season, Orin Straylight in Silvermoon offers a free weekly bonus roll. Until then, bonus rolls are available from the Great Vault at season start.
Tidebound Grotto: Instanced World Boss
The Tidebound Grotto is a new type of content in Season 2. Unlike traditional world bosses, this is an instanced encounter against Nymrissa Wavecaller that scales from Normal to Flexible Mythic difficulty.
Tidebound Grotto offers a weekly lockout separate from The Venomous Abyss. It provides additional gear and vault options without competing with your raid lockout. For a full breakdown, see the Tidebound Grotto carry.
Crest System: Mistcrests
Season 2 uses Mistcrests as the upgrade currency. Each crest tier unlocks a range of item level upgrades:
| Crest Type | Source | Upgrade Range |
|---|---|---|
| Adventurer Mistcrest | Outdoor events, T4 Delves | Adventurer track (259-276) |
| Veteran Mistcrest | LFR, Heroic dungeons, T5-6 Delves | Veteran track (272-289) |
| Champion Mistcrest | Normal raid, M+2-3 | Champion track (285-302) |
| Hero Mistcrest | Heroic raid, M+4-8, T11 Delves | Hero track (298-315) |
| Myth Mistcrest | Mythic raid, M+9+ | Myth track (311-328) |
Upgrade costs scale with each level: +10 crests per upgrade step. A full upgrade from base to max on a Heroic piece costs approximately 150 crests. Each crest tier caps at 245 weekly, so plan your upgrade path to avoid overcapping. For a detailed week-by-week gearing plan, check the Weekly Gearing Guide.
Ascendant Venomstones (Late Season)
Later in Season 2, Ascendant Venomstones unlock as a special upgrade material. Weapons, trinkets, and necklaces can be upgraded to Myth 8/6 equivalent. Venomstones cost 10 per upgrade and drop from:
- Heroic+ raid bosses
- M+10 keys
- T11 Delves
- Nightmare Prey
Loot System Mechanics
Personal Loot
The Venomous Abyss uses personal loot. Each player rolls independently on boss kills. Items can be traded to other raid members within 2 hours if the item is not an ilvl upgrade for the trader. Mythic-difficulty items follow the same trade rules.
Tier Sets
Tier tokens drop from specific bosses and can be exchanged for class-specific set pieces. The Season 2 4-piece set bonuses are tuned around the new raid mechanics. You can also convert non-tier items into tier pieces using the Catalyst system, which becomes available several weeks into the season. Catalyst conversions inherit secondary stats from the converted item.
Unique and Rare Drops
Several bosses have unique drops unavailable at lower difficulties. Mythic-only weapons from Ula'tek and exclusive trinkets from The Coiled Altar are among the most sought-after items in Season 2. These items cannot be obtained through any other source.
Gearing Strategies
Fresh Character Path
Start with world content, Delves, and Heroic dungeons to reach 285+ item level. Once there, Normal Venomous Abyss becomes accessible and will gear you to the 292-302 range. Combine Normal raid with M+2-3 keys for Champion Mistcrests to upgrade pieces between boss drops.
Heroic Progression Path
Heroic Venomous Abyss is the most efficient gearing path for most players. Boss drops range 305-315, vault rewards are Myth 1/6 (311), and bonus rolls grant Myth-track loot. A full Heroic clear each week plus 3 vault slots from M+ and Delves gives you 4-6 gear options weekly. Most players reach 310+ within 2-3 weeks of consistent play.
For efficient Heroic clears, our Venomous Abyss Heroic carry guarantees full boss kills with personal loot. The Heroic VIP Run Bundle includes both The Venomous Abyss Heroic and The Tidebound Grotto in a single run.
Mythic Progression Path
Mythic raiders start at 318 ilvl from early bosses and push toward 344 from the final two. Mythic progression is the fastest path to best-in-slot gear, but demands optimized raid teams and significant time investment. The ilvl gap between Mythic bosses 1-6 (318-328) and bosses 7-8 (344) creates a natural difficulty wall that separates casual Mythic guilds from Cutting Edge contenders.
For the Cutting Edge achievement, you need to defeat Ula'tek on Mythic difficulty before the end of Season 2. The Ahead of the Curve achievement requires a Heroic Ula'tek kill and is a common prerequisite for Mythic PUGs.
Combining Raids with Mythic+
Raid and Mythic+ dungeons complement each other. M+ provides faster gear cycles with weekly vault slots, while raids offer higher ceiling ilvl and tier pieces. The optimal approach: clear your raid difficulty each week, run 8+ M+ keys for vault slots, and use Delves to fill remaining gaps.
Season 2 Mythic+ uses a new dungeon rotation including Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, King's Rest, Temple of Sethraliss, and Ruby Life Pools. Mythic+ key carries are the fastest way to fill vault slots alongside raiding.
Frequently Asked Questions
What difficulty should I start raiding?
Normal Venomous Abyss is the entry point for most players. It drops 292-302 item level gear and teaches all boss mechanics without severe punishment. Once comfortable, move to Heroic for 305-315 gear and significantly better vault rewards (Myth 1/6 = 311). Many experienced players skip Normal entirely if they have 290+ ilvl from M+ or Delves.
Is Heroic raid worth farming?
Yes. Heroic is the best value in Season 2. Direct boss drops range 305-315, vault rewards are Myth-track (311), and bonus rolls on Heroic grant Myth-track loot. Even players progressing Mythic should clear Heroic weekly for bonus roll chances and vault options.
How much higher is Mythic last 2 bosses loot?
The final two Mythic bosses (The Coiled Altar and Ula'tek) drop 344 item level gear. That is 16 ilvl above standard Mythic boss drops (328) and 29 ilvl above Heroic max (315). This is the highest gear available in Season 2.
What gear should I upgrade first?
Weapons first. Weapons provide the largest per-slot DPS/healing increase. After weapons, prioritize tier set pieces (for set bonus activation), then trinkets with strong procs. For a detailed upgrade priority, see our gear upgrading guide.
What happens to Season 1 raid loot?
Season 1 raids (The Dreamrift, March on Quel'Danas, The Voidspire) remain accessible but their loot is no longer relevant for progression. Season 2 item levels start where Season 1 ended. Season 1 Cutting Edge and other seasonal achievements are permanently locked.
Can I gear up without raiding?
Yes. Delves (up to T11 for Hero Mistcrests), Mythic+ dungeons, PvP, and world content all provide gear. However, raiding offers the highest direct drops, exclusive tier pieces, and the most efficient vault options. Combining raiding with other sources is the fastest path to max ilvl. For a complete plan, see the Midnight Gearing Guide.
