WoW Midnight Gearing Guide: Item Level Chart & Paths | Season 2 (2026)

Season 2 Gearing Overview

Midnight Season 2 introduces a major item level jump from Season 1. The base item levels start 46 levels higher, with the cap now reaching ilvl 334 for the standard Myth track, with exceptional late-season boss drops reaching ilvl 344. This guide covers every gearing path: raid, Mythic+, Delves, and world content to get you raid-ready as efficiently as possible.

Whether you're a fresh level 90 or pushing mythic-ready, there's a specific path to optimize your gearing speed. The key is understanding where each item level tier comes from and prioritizing the highest-value activities for your current gear level.

Patch 12.1 Preseason: Reach ilvl 308 Before Season 2

Patch 12.1 launched on August 11 with a one-week preseason before Season 2 officially begins on August 18. During this window, most endgame systems are restricted, but you can still reach up to ilvl 308 through Champion gear upgrades. Use this week to build a strong foundation so you hit the ground running when the full season opens.

Step 1: Weekly Quests and Your First Spark

Start in Silvermoon City and pick up the two weekly quests. Unity Against the Void works the same way it did in Season 1, offering multiple content types to choose from. The second quest from Verissa (next to Leandrin) requires Fading Void Whispers, which drop from dungeons, delves, treasures, and dangerous monsters.

Completing your first weekly quest awards a Spark of Tides, the currency for high-end crafted gear. You can only earn one spark during preseason week, but grabbing it now sets you up for a powerful crafted piece in Week 2.

Step 2: Free Veteran Gear from Renown Vendors

If you built up faction renown during Season 1, each Midnight faction offers a free piece of Veteran gear through a short quest chain. Visit each vendor in order:

  • Southrel's Haven (Eversong Woods) -- Veteran headpiece. Requires completing the Southrel Square event and empowering a runestone.
  • Ammanazar Village (Zul'Amon) -- Choice of Veteran necklaces. Requires completing an Abundance event.
  • Harendar -- Veteran belt. Complete a Legends of the Haraneer event.
  • The Voidstorm -- Crucible of Erratic Energies trinket. Complete the Storm Marian Assault event. This trinket was strong in Season 1 and returns for Season 2.

After completing the Patch 12.1 story quests, you can also pick up Veteran bracers from Zjara's Forces at Renowned Rank 2 by completing a Curse Surge event. All renown vendor rewards are available on every character even though renown is account-wide, making this a fast way to gear alts.

Step 3: Pinnacle Caches and Prey Hunts

Every weekly quest and event quest rewards a Pinnacle Cache. The first two caches you open contain a random piece of Veteran gear. After that, caches give crests and currencies instead.

Hard Mode Prey Hunts are available during preseason (Nightmare mode unlocks in Week 2). Your first two Hard Mode completions each reward a piece of Veteran gear, adding two more items to your collection.

The preseason Lair Boss is available on World difficulty only. Join a group or walk in solo and the system creates a group for you. These bosses are tuned for small groups and can drop Veteran gear with some unique items in the loot table.

In total, this gives you at least 9 guaranteed pieces of Veteran gear (plus a chance at a 10th from the Lair Boss) across different gear slots.

Step 4: Mythic Zero Dungeons for Champion Gear

The best gear available in preseason comes from Mythic Zero dungeons. Each boss has a chance to drop Champion-track gear, which can be upgraded all the way to ilvl 308 with enough Champion Mistcrests. During preseason, Mythic Zero dungeons have a weekly lockout (one clear per dungeon). After Season 2 launches on August 18, the lockout resets to daily.

Clear every available dungeon once this week to maximize your Champion gear drops. Mythic Plus is not available until the season officially starts.

Step 5: Fill Remaining Gaps

The Field Accolade vendors in Silvermoon now sell Season 2 gear. You can purchase Adventurer gear for 200 accolades, random Veteran gear boxes for 500, or specific Veteran slot pieces for 750 accolades. If you saved accolades from Season 1, this is an efficient way to plug gaps in your weakest slots.

Crafted gear is another option for filling low-ilvl slots. You can use Adventurer Mistcrests to craft gear up to ilvl 279, or Veteran Mistcrests to reach ilvl 292. Consider crafting two pieces with Embellishments for an easy power boost (you can have two embellishments active at a time).

What to skip in preseason: Delves are limited to Adventurer-track gear and Veteran Mistcrest rewards during preseason, even at Tier 11. They are useful for farming crests but not for gear drops. Normal Prey Hunts, Heroic dungeons, world quests, and rares in the new zone all cap out at Adventurer gear, so they are only worth running if you have very low ilvl pieces to replace.

Complete Item Level Table

Season 2 features five distinct upgrade tracks, each with six progression tiers. Note the 8/6 and 9/6 mythic tiers at the end of the season.

Track 1/6 2/6 3/6 4/6 5/6 6/6
Adventurer 266 270 273 276 279 282
Veteran 279 283 286 289 292 295
Champion 292 296 299 302 305 308
Hero 305 309 312 315 318 321
Myth 318 322 325 328 331 334

Late Season Tiers: Myth 8/6 gear reaches ilvl 341 via Ascendant Venomstones. Myth 9/6 (ilvl 344) drops from the final two mythic bosses and is extremely rare.

Upgrade Tracks and Mistcrests Explained

Every piece of gear belongs to one of five tracks. You upgrade items within that track using Mistcrests, the primary upgrade currency in Midnight Season 2. Each track has its own source of crests.

Adventurer Mistcrests come from outdoor events and Tier 4 Delves. Use these to upgrade gear from ilvl 266 to 282. This track is primarily for fresh level 90s or as a temporary stepping stone.

Veteran Mistcrests drop from outdoor content, LFR, Heroic dungeons, and Tier 5-6 Delves. You'll use these to push gear from ilvl 279 to 295. Most players cycle through Veteran track for 1-2 weeks before moving up.

Champion Mistcrests are acquired from Normal raid bosses and Mythic Keystone dungeons up to M+6. These upgrade your gear from ilvl 292 to 308. This is where most players spend significant time.

Hero Mistcrests come from Heroic raid, Mythic Keystone dungeons M+7 and above, and Tier 11 Delves. These push gear to ilvl 305-321. Competitive raiders and pushers will farm these heavily.

Myth Mistcrests drop from Mythic raid and Mythic+ 10 and above. These are the scarcest crests and upgrade gear to ilvl 318-334, the standard final cap.

Each upgrade level costs more crests than the last, scaling upward as your gear improves. A full Heroic trinket now costs 150 Mistcrests, up from 100 in previous seasons.

Great Vault Changes in Season 2

The Great Vault now awards gear at different item levels depending on your difficulty completed. This makes it critical to push the highest difficulty you can manage each week.

LFR completion grants a Champion 1/6 reward (ilvl 292). This is your baseline if you only do raid finder. Normal raid opens up to Hero 1/6 (ilvl 305), a significant jump. Heroic raid vaults drop Myth 1/6 (ilvl 318) gear, and Mythic raid pushes this to Myth 6/6 (ilvl 334).

The final two mythic bosses offer exceptional rewards. Clearing the last two bosses on mythic grants 9/6 Myth gear (ilvl 344), the absolute highest item level available.

You now receive bonus rolls at a reduced cost of just 1 coin per attempt. These were available at the start of Season 2 via the Great Vault. Beginning Week 8, Orin Straylight in Silvermoon will offer a free weekly bonus roll to all players.

Bonus Rolls Are Back

Bonus rolls return with a major quality-of-life change: they now cost only 1 coin per use instead of 2. This cuts your total coin spending in half for the season.

Coins are available immediately from the Great Vault at season start, so prepare by saving them in advance if possible. Beginning in Week 8, Orin Straylight in Silvermoon will distribute a free bonus roll to every player weekly.

Use bonus rolls on bosses that drop pieces you need, prioritizing high-impact slots like weapons, trinkets, and set pieces. On Heroic difficulty, a successful bonus roll gives you Myth-track gear, making it extremely valuable for gearing up quickly.

Best Gearing Path: Fresh 90 to Raid-Ready

Your gearing path depends on your target difficulty. Here's the optimal progression to reach raid-ready status as fast as possible.

Week 1-2: Adventurer and Veteran Gear (ilvl 266-295)

As a fresh level 90, start with outdoor events on the Coiled Isle. These drop Adventurer Mistcrests and starter gear. Concurrently, queue for LFR to grab cheap upgrades and familiarize yourself with the raid mechanics.

Run Tier 4 Delves to earn more Adventurer Mistcrests. Delves scale to your item level, so they remain useful for a few weeks. Upgrade your weapon and trinkets first; these slots give the biggest damage boost.

By the end of Week 2, aim for ilvl 292-296. At this point, normal raid becomes viable. You'll transition to farming Veteran and Champion Mistcrests through Heroic dungeons and lower Mythic+ keys.

Week 3-4: Champion Track (ilvl 292-308)

Start your normal raid clears. Normal raid bosses drop Champion Mistcrest and Champion-track gear. Run Mythic+ keys up to M+6 difficulty; these are efficient for Champion Mistcrests and offer faster clear times than dungeons.

Target ilvl 305-308 before pushing Heroic raid. This usually takes 2-3 weeks of consistent farming. Prioritize slots that impact your survivability most for raid encounters.

Use Great Vault to grab a guaranteed piece each week. If you complete Normal raid, you'll get a Hero 1/6 item (ilvl 305); use your bonus roll on the slot you need most.

Week 5+: Hero and Myth Tracks (ilvl 305-334)

Once you hit ilvl 308-312, Heroic raid opens up. Heroic bosses drop Hero Mistcrests and Myth-track gear. Push Mythic+ to M+7 and above for consistent Hero Mistcrest farming.

Your goal is ilvl 321-325 before attempting Mythic raid. This usually requires 4-6 weeks from fresh 90, depending on time invested and RNG. Cap your Hero Mistcrests each week and upgrade your weakest slots.

For Mythic raid, you need ilvl 330+ on most classes and specs. Focus on consistent Heroic raid clears and M+9-10 keys to farm Myth Mistcrests. Each additional upgrade becomes exponentially slower as the costs rise.

Gearing Through Mythic+

Mythic+ dungeons are one of the fastest ways to gear up, especially if you can push high keys early. Eight dungeons are available in Midnight Season 2: Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, King's Rest, Temple of Sethraliss, and Ruby Life Pools.

Up to M+6 keys drop Champion Mistcrests and Champion-track gear. These keys are accessible as soon as you hit ilvl 292-296 and provide consistent weekly rewards. Clear one to three per week for steady progression.

M+7 and above keys yield Hero Mistcrests and Hero-track loot. These are significantly harder but offer better rewards and are essential for pushing past ilvl 315. Plan your key routes and coordinate with your group to optimize clear times.

M+10 and above unlock Myth rewards from the Great Vault. These are the hardest keys to push but give access to the final tier of gearing. Most players target one M+10 weekly for the vault slot.

Prioritize fixing your worst-geared slots first. A well-geared weapon or trinket provides more value than a marginal upgrade to an already-strong slot. Use your weekly vault runs to round out your gear set.

Armor Stacking Tip: When running dungeons (especially Mythic Zero during preseason), try to group with players who share your armor type. A full group of plate wearers, for example, ensures every gear drop is plate. When someone gets a duplicate drop for a slot they already have filled, they can trade it to another group member. This significantly increases your chances of walking away with usable loot from each run.

Gearing Through Raids

Raid gearing is more predictable than Mythic+ but requires larger time commitments and coordination. The Venomous Abyss contains eight bosses across Normal, Heroic, and Mythic difficulties.

LFR Raids (ilvl 292) are the easiest entry point but offer the slowest gearing. Most players skip straight to Normal if possible. Use LFR only for target farming specific pieces or as a last resort for fresh characters.

Normal Raids (ilvl 305) should be your main focus from Week 2-3 onward. Normal bosses drop Champion Mistcrests and Champion-track gear consistently. One full clear grants 8 pieces of loot plus vault rewards. Schedule two to three clears per week to maximize progression.

Heroic Raids (ilvl 318) become viable at ilvl 305-310. Heroic bosses are mechanically challenging but offer Hero Mistcrests and Myth-track gear. Viable from ilvl 312-318. Your guild or raid team's consistency here will determine how fast you climb ilvl tiers.

Mythic Raids (ilvl 334 / 344) are for hardcore guilds pushing cutting-edge. These require ilvl 325+ and carry substantial mechanical demands. Only attempt Mythic if your guild is organized and you're committed to complex fight mechanics.

Bonus roll every Heroic and Mythic boss on pieces you need. A lucky roll can save weeks of farming. Use your weekly great vault to grab an additional guaranteed piece and cap out your Mistcrest gains.

See our Venomous Abyss raid guide for boss strategies and loot tables.

Gearing Through Delves

Delves are open-ended dungeons you can run solo or in small groups. Three new Delves launched in Midnight Season 2: Ring of Glory, Gnarldor Isle, and Venomfall Deeps Nemesis.

Tier 4 Delves drop Adventurer Mistcrests. These clear quickly and are ideal for fresh characters. Run them for your first 1-2 weeks to establish a baseline ilvl of 280+.

Tier 5-6 Delves reward Veteran Mistcrests and Veteran-track gear. These become efficient once you hit ilvl 280. The difficulty ramps significantly, but they're soloable for most specs with proper kiting and cooldown management.

Tier 11 Delves drop Hero Mistcrests. These are mechanically punishing and require ilvl 310+ to clear reliably. They're worth running once you're pushing Heroic raid content, but not before.

Delves scale with your item level, so they remain relevant throughout the season. They're particularly good for casual players who can't commit to raid schedules. One run takes 15-30 minutes depending on tier.

Preseason note: During the Patch 12.1 preseason week, Delves are limited to Adventurer-track gear and Veteran Mistcrest rewards regardless of tier. Even Tier 11 completions will not drop higher-tier gear until Season 2 officially starts. Use Delves for crest farming during preseason, not for gear drops.

For in-depth strategies, check out our Midnight Delves guide.

Patch 12.1.5 Gearing Updates

Patch 12.1.5 arrived on October 13 with major gearing additions that shift the late-season progression path. Three new content sources provide fresh gear acquisition routes, while Ascendant Venomstones unlock as a pathway to push past current ilvl caps. If you're mid-progression, these systems dramatically accelerate your climb toward Mythic-ready status.

Ascendant Venomstones: Upgrade Weapons and Trinkets

Venomstones are now farmable through repeatable endgame content and represent the fastest way to bridge Hero gear to competitive Mythic levels. Each upgrade costs 10 stones and can push select items up two full tiers.

With Venomstones, a Hero 6/6 weapon (ilvl 321) upgrades to Myth 8/6 (ilvl 328), and Myth 6/6 gear (ilvl 334) pushes to Myth 8/6 (ilvl 340). Max-quality Tidal Crafted items are also eligible for the upgrade path, making crafted trinkets and weapons a viable substitute for raid drops if RNG hasn't been kind.

Source Weekly Cap Requirements
Heroic/Mythic Raid Bosses Weekly lockout Heroic difficulty or higher
Mythic+ Dungeons No weekly cap Keystone level +10 or higher
Tier 11 Bountiful Delves No weekly cap Tier 11 completion
Nightmare Prey Hunt Weekly lockout Champion chest reward

Timeline: The quest to unlock Venomstone upgrades arrived October 13. Quest completion is available immediately, but actively farming stones for upgrades starts October 20 to ensure the system is live on all realms.

Priority Strategy: Upgrade your weapon first. Weapon damage scales across all damage types and persists season-to-season. After weapons, prioritize trinkets with powerful on-use or passive effects. Necklaces are third. Avoid upgrading armor pieces; raid gear rotates faster and Venomstone costs are better spent on items with long shelf lives. For detailed strategies, see our Ascendant Venomstones guide.

The Unbinding of Kith'ix: New Single-Boss Raid

A single-boss mythical raid encounter opens with Patch 12.1.5. The Unbinding of Kith'ix operates on a weekly lockout and provides consistent, predictable gear at all difficulties.

Loot by Difficulty: Raid Finder drops Veteran-track gear (ilvl 285, capped at 3/6), Normal offers Champion gear (ilvl 298, capped at 3/6), Heroic rewards Hero-track items (ilvl 311, capped at 3/6), and Mythic drops Myth gear (ilvl 324, capped at 3/6). Every difficulty grants 3 pieces of loot per clear, making this an efficient weekly stop for targeted gearing.

Notable Loot: The encounter features unique items unavailable elsewhere. Band of the Swarmcaller is a highly desirable ring. Multiple trinkets and weapons drop here with mechanics tailored to specific specs, making this a priority farm if your class has a Kith'ix-exclusive item.

Group size is flexible and the encounter is designed for reasonable mechanical complexity. Most guilds will incorporate a Kith'ix clear into their weekly routine once progression elsewhere plateaus. For strategy details and loot tables, see our Kith'ix raid carry service.

Labyrinth of Kindo'jan: Mega-Delve Gearing

The Labyrinth is a sprawling nine-chamber delve with Mythic-track rewards for deep, sustained solo or group runs. It's the most mechanically demanding delve and the most rewarding at high Mythic tiers.

Tier 8+ Labyrinth clears award Mythical Soul Fragments, a currency that converts directly into Myth-track gear upgrades. This provides an alternative to farming M+10+ dungeons for those who prefer the Delve playstyle. Each chamber features environmental hazards and boss encounters that require careful cooldown management and positioning.

Great Vault Integration: Boss kills inside the Labyrinth count toward Great Vault progress. A full Labyrinth run can yield multiple vault stacks, making it an attractive route for completing weekly vault objectives while farming soul fragments.

Gear Quality: Myth-track items from the Labyrinth compete directly with Mythic raid drops in terms of item level and stats. Solo players or small groups unable to access Mythic raiding can use the Labyrinth as their primary late-season gearing path. For a full walkthrough of chamber strategies and optimization tips, see our Labyrinth of Kindo'jan guide and Labyrinth carry service.

Aqir Invasions: Quick Catch-Up Gear

Aqir Invasions are hourly world events that occur in Eversong Woods and Zul'Aman on a weekly rotation. Each invasion lasts 10 minutes and rewards Champion Mistcrests, Voidlight Marl currency, and Aqir Research Enclave reputation. These events are permanent additions, not time-limited.

Champion Mistcrests from invasions make them an excellent catch-up tool for characters entering the Hero gearing phase. The events scale with zone participation and require no signup, so participate during peak hours for the fastest completions.

Integration with Patch 12.1.5: These four systems work together to accelerate gearing across all playstyles. Venomstone farming through Mythic+ or Heroic raid, Kith'ix weekly clears for guaranteed pieces, Labyrinth solo farming for Myth crests, and Invasion events for catch-up Mistcrests create multiple pathways to the same goal. Choose the activities that match your schedule and playstyle.

For a complete breakdown of how these patches interact with existing systems, see our Patch 12.1.5 guide.

Catalyst Changes

The Catalyst allows you to convert raid gear into set armor for your class. In Midnight Season 2, catalyzed set pieces inherit the secondary stats of the item being converted, allowing stat optimization for your spec.

Any Cantrip effects on the original piece are maintained after conversion. This means you can craft hybrid pieces with exactly the stats you need while preserving special item properties.

Use the Catalyst to fill set piece slots that raid RNG hasn't provided. Convert high-roll secondary stat pieces into set armor to perfect your stat distribution.

Tips for Efficient Gearing

Use the Crest Upgrade Trick: Don't discard old gear when you replace it. When you equip a Champion piece in a slot where you already had a Veteran piece, upgrading that old Veteran piece to 6/6 (which costs only 20 Veteran Mistcrests) makes the new Champion piece free to upgrade to 2/6. This saves you 20 Champion Mistcrests per slot. The same principle applies when replacing Champion gear with Hero gear later in the season. Keep your old gear and upgrade it before replacing -- this trick can put you weeks ahead in progression.

Plan Your Week: Map out which activities reward the Mistcrests you need most. If you're on Champion track, do up to M+6 and Normal raid three times weekly. If you're pushing Mythic, prioritize Heroic+ content.

Cap Your Crests: Most players have weekly caps on Mistcrest rewards. Front-load your runs early in the week so you hit the cap, then switch to activities for fun or additional vault rolls.

Target Specific Slots: Don't upgrade evenly; upgrade in order of impact. Weapon and trinkets first, then ring and necklace, then chest and shoulders (if part of your set bonus), then remaining pieces.

Save Bonus Rolls: Bank your bonus roll coins early. Use them only on bosses that drop high-priority slots. Bonus rolling the weakest link in your gear has multiplied value compared to upgrading already-strong pieces.

Join a Guild or Community: Solo gearing is possible but slow. A guild running regular raids and keys accelerates your progression significantly. Many guilds have multiple raid tiers or key-pushing groups.

Use DPS Tier Lists: Know your class and spec's power level. Some classes spike earlier in the season or benefit from specific gear more than others. Check our Midnight DPS tier list to prioritize your main character wisely.

Track Your Weekly Routine: Consistency beats sporadic heroic attempts. Clearing Normal raid weekly plus two M+5 keys provides more reliable progression than hoping for lucky Mythic drops.

FAQ: How to Gear Up Midnight Season 2

What's the fastest way to gear up in Midnight Season 2?

Run Normal raid weekly plus M+2-3 keys. This combination gives you Champion Mistcrests, Champion-track gear, and great vault rewards. Most players reach ilvl 305 in 2-3 weeks this way. Heroic raid and higher keys accelerate the timeline if your group is ready.

Can I skip LFR entirely?

Yes. LFR rewards are slow compared to Normal and Heroic. Start with Normal raid as soon as you hit ilvl 292-296, which takes 1-2 weeks of outdoor and Delve grinding. LFR is only useful for target farming specific pieces if Normal RNG fails you.

How many Mistcrests do I need to upgrade a full set?

Upgrading 10 items from 1/6 to 6/6 on any track costs roughly 400-500 Mistcrests total, accounting for scaling costs. With weekly caps, this takes 4-6 weeks per track. Prioritize high-impact slots (weapon, trinkets, set pieces) first and upgrade the rest gradually.

When should I farm Ascendant Venomstones?

Only after you're pushing Mythic+ 10+ or Heroic raid consistently. Venomstones are rare early season. Save them for weapons and trinkets, which have the longest lifespan. Upgrading a weapon from ilvl 315 to 334 provides more value than any armor piece.

Is it worth pushing Mythic+ 9+ for Myth Mistcrests?

Only if your goal is Mythic raid. M+9+ is mechanically demanding and time-consuming for the Mistcrest reward. Most players reach ilvl 325+ faster through Heroic raid plus Venomstone upgrades than through M+9 grinding. Push high keys for the challenge and vault rewards, not just Mistcrest farming.

What if I have limited playtime?

Focus on your weekly guaranteed drops: Normal raid clear (8 pieces), Heroic raid clear if geared (8 pieces), and one Great Vault claim. This takes 4-6 hours per week and is more efficient than scattered key runs. Slot in one M+6 if time allows for additional vault loot.

What should I focus on during preseason week?

Complete at least one weekly quest for your Spark of Tides. Grab all free Veteran gear from renown vendors. Do your first two Hard Mode Prey Hunts. Clear every Mythic Zero dungeon once. Fill gaps with Field Accolades or crafted gear. This sets you up with ilvl 290+ before Season 2 officially starts on August 18.
